You know the difference between a DSLR camera and a mirrorless camera. (The only difference between a DSLR camera and a mirrorless camera is that the mirrorless camera has an electronic viewfinder, not a mirror.) Therefore, when we talk about the smartphone camera and the DSLR camera, the mirrorless camera also belongs to the category of DSLR cameras.

So let’s compare these two types of cameras with the smartphone camera.

First, we need to look at the components of a camera. If you’re a regular camera user, you know filters are on the front of a camera. These filters can make a lot of beautiful changes to the photo you take.

Example:  ND filters are one of the most commonly used by photographers.

ND Filters

These ND filters can control the light entering the camera. To put it another way, this is like wearing sunglasses on a camera lens. There are also variable ND filters. This allows you to change the intensity of ND filters. Things like this can make the photo you take very beautifully. Most daytime photographers can use these ND filters to slow down the shutter speed and take pictures.

Use of ND filters to photo.

Another good filter is the polarization filter. This allows you to filter only one polarization of light and direct it into the camera.

What are the features of a smartphone camera?

Speaking of a smartphone camera, a smartphone camera cannot use filters. But filters can be used by attaching a third-party filter device to the phone. But not a single practical task. The lens is behind this filter. The larger the diameter of the lens, the more light it can absorb. It can increase low light performance. You can also increase the image quality. A DSLR camera can zoom in optically using several lenses.

Usually, a very small lens is used in the camera phone. The reason for this is that there is no room for a small smartphone to fit a large lens. As a solution to this, smartphone manufacturers have decided to make a smartphone using several cameras. One zoom lens is attached to one of the cameras in the smartphone. But it does not zoom in like a DSLR camera. But some smartphones have the ability to get a large-scale zoom using image processors.

Inside this lens is the aperture. This is like the human eye. The size can be enlarged or made smaller. That way you can control the amount of light coming into the camera. You can also expand the focus hereby enlarging the aperture. This method allows photographers to blur the background of images.

The smartphone has a very small camera unit. Therefore the aperture here is also very small. It is difficult for the camera to capture a large amount of light. The low light performance of a smartphone is lower than a DSLR camera. A phone camera with a small aperture cannot achieve a very good background blur.

What are the features of a DSLR camera?

Most DSLR cameras have a mechanical shutter. The shutter on a DSLR camera can be opened or closed at any time. It determines how long the light stays on the sensor.

But a smartphone does not have this mechanical shutter. So, the image processor decides the shutter time using a digital tactic. This also applies to modern mirrorless cameras. They also do not have a mechanical shutter and use digital tactics. This can sometimes be considered an advantage. Because there is no noise when taking a photo.

The sensor is located behind the shutter. There are two main things to consider when looking at this sensor.

  • Megapixel size
  • Size of the sensor

You can use a larger megapixel sensor to take a higher-resolution photo.

But as the resolution of a photo increases, so does not its quality.

If you increase the megapixel size of a small sensor, the one-pixel pitch will be smaller. Therefore, the quality of your photo may decrease. If the sensor is not enlarged and only the megapixel size is enlarged, the quality of the camera will decrease.

If you are going to buy a camera because of things like this, do not pay attention to a camera that has all the features.  Get a camera that has only the features you need. If you buy a camera that has all the features, you will not use most of the features in it. But you have spent money on those features. Then all that money will be wasted.

Your smartphone has a very small camera unit. It’s like the size of your thumb. So it has a small sensor. Therefore, its low light performance may decrease, autofocus performance may decrease, and the quality of the photo may decrease. For these reasons, it is difficult to get a natural background blur from a smartphone camera.

Now you might think that a photo taken by a DSLR camera should always be better than a photo taken by a smartphone. Is that really so?

Those who have used both these cameras now know that the photos taken with a smartphone are as high as the photos taken with a DSLR camera. But professional photographers will not agree with this idea. But if two images taken by these two cameras are posted on social media (Facebook, Instagram), the images will be of such a quality that it will be difficult to see any difference.

Even though the hardware in a smartphone is inferior to the hardware in a DSLR camera, your smartphone is capable of taking such good images because of its image processor.

This is called computational photography.

Artificial intelligence is often used for image processing in this smartphone. So what are the objects in the photo you took? What is its status? It can Check and enhance the image. In this process, you can change the contrast and exposure of the photo. It also has the ability to change colors.

This artificial intelligence can detect if there is a man in the picture you take and make the skin color of the man there more beautiful.

With this artificial intelligence and basic camera hardware, using a state-of-the-art image processor your smartphone can take good photos like a DSLR camera.

Which camera wins?

This means that an image taken from a smartphone can be as good as an image taken with a DSLR camera with its technology. But here the smartphone does the same process with artificial intelligence. It’s not so good for a professional cameraman. They often like to get the photo changes done by themselves.

Because of this, it is unbelievable that a smartphone camera can beat a DSLR camera. And since these two cameras are in two markets, there is almost no competition between them.
